Whoopi Goldberg on Thursday defended the movie Academy’s resolution to present Will Smith the choice of leaving Sunday’s Oscars after his slap of Chris Rock on stage.

Goldberg went on to stress that, while she wasn’t present at the awards show, she’s heard from others who were there that many in the audience were “surprised” by what went down.

The co-host went on to praise Rock for keeping his composure in the aftermath.

“Let’s speak about that as a result of that’s the perfect of the Academy,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg’s co-hosts also recognized her role on the board of governors, to which she replied that she isn’t at liberty to speak on behalf of the Academy.

“I can’t because I’m not their spokesperson and everything they had to say they’ve said. But there are things that I do know. People said to me, ‘Well, you know, they were running over to greet him’ and someone else is saying, ‘Well, you know, everybody was checking to make sure he wasn’t having a manic moment,’ because that’s not what he’s known for, smacking people. So we’ll see what happens and that’s where I keep saying let us keep in mind that there’s one person responsible for this,” she added.

Goldberg’s remarks come someday after The Academy of Movement Image Arts and Sciences launched “disciplinary proceedings” towards the “King Richard” star.

“The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the academy’s standards of conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior and compromising the integrity of the academy,” a press release obtained by Every day Put up Digital stated.

“Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”

Penalties from the Academy vary from “suspension, expulsion or other sanctions permitted by the bylaws and standards of conduct.”

Many have targeted on why Smith was allowed to stay seated within the entrance row on the Academy Awards after the incident. On Wednesday, the Academy stated it tried to take away the actor from the viewers.

“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the Academy stated. “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”

A consultant for the Academy declined to present specifics on the way it tried to eliminated Smith. After he struck Rock in response to a joke about spouse Jada Pinkett Smith, a number of stars, together with Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry, spoke to the 53-year-old Smith.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television,” the academy stated. “Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage, and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

Smith has since publicly apologized to Rock.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Smith wrote partly on Instagram earlier than publicly apologizing to Rock. “I was out of line and I was wrong.”

Smith’s full assertion: “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
